Jules has maintained Heron Pond Studio in her home over the last 25 years. Jules has participated in open studios, solo and group shows, silent auctions, art forums, and juried shows.
As a printmaker Jules has developed a self-taught style of design and creation of her art. She works in relief with wood and linoleum, and enjoys the painterly methods of monoprints.
Jules finds that the process for creating a relief print has very distinct boundaries; design and transfer, cutting the plate, choice of paper and method of printing, and then inking and pulling the print. Each step along the way has a separate set of choices and very different activities that provide their own kind of energy to the finished print.
“If I start from a drawing, then cut the design in wood and finish with a print on paper or cloth, I have actually created three pieces of art, each with their own perspective on the original idea. Each phase of the process is work I love to do and I can’t wait to see the development of the idea in each next step.”
Creating monoprints has added a style to Jules’ repertoire that includes a wider range of use of color and the flow of creating images that comes from using a brush or palette knife to create an image.
“It’s not what is cut away, but rather that which is added that makes that monoprints work. And, any attempt to repeat the process will bring out a different original look, which adds to the sense of surprise and freshness of each image.”
